Have you tried running in a swimming pool? I know it's not quite the same thing --- in fact, it's even tougher --- but you are working the same muscles and mimicking your usual running motion without causing any injury to yourself. Running in a pool, especially in the deep end, helps to heal injuries like shin splints much more quickly. Local YMCAs and the Aquatic Center in Tonawanda have deep end pools that you can use for a fee if you don't have your own deep end pool in your backyard. So if you can't run but want to feel like you are (just without hitting the ground), head to a pool!
ReplyDeleteRunning in the pool's deep end? I know this may sound silly, but how do you do that?!?
ReplyDeleteMost clubs in the area that have pools also have "waist belts" (Aqua Joggers) that you can strap on around your waist. That keeps you afloat and upright so that you can mimic your usual running action. Check out this article from Runner's World:

or, if you want to give it a try, you can get your own Aqua Jogger: http://www.aquajogger.com/index.php
You won't move too quickly at first, but it's a heck of a workout and it helps with injuries. At least, it did with mine!
Oh, and you can still run in the shallow end without a "waist belt." You will have some minimum impact on the floor of the pool, and you won't get quite the same workout as you would in the deep end. But it still won't add to your injuries!
